Men's curling final-Canada vs. Norway

After spending some time researching the rules and scoring system on curling on the internet, I finally understood what on earth was happening when I was watching the men's final of curling. I must say that the thing I enjoyed the most from this game was Norway's attire. They had this Power Ranger thing going on with there pants, it was pretty entertaining to see. Canada ended up winning 6-3 which is great since the women the night before managed to get the silver, which means that Canada is pretty awesome when it comes to curling.
Canada now has 13 gold medals which sets the record for most gold medals won by by a country hosting the Olympics. Overall, I believe we are currently in third place for medals overall, which makes this Canada's best Olympic run in a long time.

Canada vs. USA women's hockey final

Well it looks like Canada gets another gold medal! After our women's hockey team nearly destroying every other team out there, it was becoming pretty obvious that they wouldn't choke when it mattered most. Yes, the Americans did put up a fight, only letting us score 2 goals, but we were unstoppable. The game ended at 2-0, not letting one goal in, Szabados played the game of her life. I especially enjoyed the part when an American fell on Szabados and she began hitting her continuously until the American got off. Of course Poulin was the star having scored the only goals of the game, I think we'll be seeing some great things from her in the future since shes so young.

Day 12 of winter Olympics

I just finished watching men's hockey team Canada play against Germany in a qualifier to play against the Russians. The Canadians performed to full expectations in this do or die match. The coach created a new, extremely motivated line that consisted of Eric Staal, Jarome Iginla and Sidney Crosby. Together, this line scored 3 goals in a game that ended 8-2 for team Canada. Rick Nash managed to break the ice and score his first Olympic goal which was nice to see since he is a great hockey player.
A great moment was Canada's second goal which was a phantom which none of the referees even noticed it going right through the net. That's right, the puck went liderally through the net, thats how fast Shea Weber's goal was. This will be a great boost for Canada's ego against the great hockey team that is Russia.

Day 7 of winter Olympics

Today I watched team Canada play against team Switzerland in hockey. The game was very close the whole way, both teams had substantial difficulties scoring on the opposing net. But it was team Canada who pulled out the win thanks to Crosby's goal in the shoutoot, which was in fact the only goal in the shoutoot. I must say that there was some very strong goaltending on both sides of the rink. I f all the other teams play with as much heart as the Swiss, then I'm starting to get nervous about the chances for Canada to actually win gold or even a medal at that. Thats all for today, see ya tomorrow.

Day 6 of Vancouver winter Olympics

Last night I watched team Canada play hockey against Norway. Norway held there ground throughout the first period, but there chances of winning soon slipped away after Canada's first goal, done by Iginla who ended up scoring a hat trick. The Canadians ended winning the game 8-0. Team Canada has had a great start and hopefully they can keep it up. There chemistry is substantially stronger than that of the team who played in Turin, 4 years ago. Thats all for today...

Tuesday winter Olympics (day 5)

On Tuesday, day 5 of the Vancouver Winter Olympics, I watched the women's snowboard cross. The gold medal winner was Maelle Ricker of Canada. The announcer advised that there is a Canadian one dollar Looney buried under the track. Maybe the Looney brought luck to Canada. In other news, the American favorite whipped out in the semi-finals, which is always nice to see if you're a Canadian :)

Monday- Snowbaord cross

Today I watched the finals of the snowbaord cross. The Canadian Mike Robertson spent much of the race in first place, but around the end of the race the American Seth Wescott took the lead and ended up getting the gold. The Canadian followed with a silver medal. Thats all for today...

Day 3 of the Winter Olympics

Today I watched the men's Biathlon 10km sprint. This is my first time watching this event and I must say it seems to be one of the harder events of the winter olympics. It involes both cross-country skiing and target shooting with a rifle. There was a lone Canadian involved in this race, his name is J.P Le Guellec. Although the race was won by a Frenchmen named Vinson Jay, Le Guellec had a good race and finished in 6th. place. He had said he wanted to be in the top ten so both he and his coach were well pleased with his 6th. place finish.

Day 2 of winter Olympics

Today I watched the men's 5000m speed skating. Canada's D. Morrison was behind USA's Marsicano throughout the race. Marsicano ended up beating the Canadian by 3 seconds, although he was struggling to keep his pace for the last 2 laps. Though the commentators did say that Morrison did skate one of his better races, but then again, they are a little biased.

Afterwards, another speed skating race took place involving another Canadian, Makowsky. His adversary was New Zealand's Dobbin. They stayed toe-to-toe throughout the race which is good to see considering the last race. It should be noted that Dobbin has only been speed skating for 2 years now, and has never been to the Olympics, which is very impressive. Nearing the end of the race, Dobbin lost momentum and started to fall back until the race was out of reach for him. It ended with Makowsky beating him by 5 seconds.

Thats all for today... until tomorrow -Malik out

Winter olympics opening ceremonies

I have to say I wasn't expecting the opening ceremonies at the Vancouver olympics to revolve around our Native heritage. But I suppose it only makes sense. Did anyone else notice how the Aboriginals were dancing throughout the whole ceremony? All that time spent introducing every country and there just dancing and chanting the whole time, it looked exhausting!
It was great to see old hockey players like Jaromir Jagr and Peter Forsberg carry there countries flags at the ceremony. Sean White was there with his red hair and red eyes to match... as long as the olympics dont consider marijuana a performance enhancing drug, he's there to stay.
Canada was the last country to enter the stadium, and when they did, just about 60' 000 in the stands went crazy. This followed by a decent performance by Bryan Adams and Nelly Furtado. So now the stage is set for the 2010 Vancouver winter Olympics
